I would imagine it has to do with fan safety getting to and from the game and not the actual playing conditions on the field.

Yeah... that just screwed over up two friends who were to go to the game.
They have a hotel room Saturday night and a flight home in the early evening on Sunday.

Please elaborate how the state and local officials responsible for convincing the NFL to change the time are in any way big babies?

Big babies? I hope you were joking. When it comes to safety of fans and people trying to get to and from the game, plus
workers. If it is a big ice storm, it could be crippling in the sense of utilities.

Only plus is the temperatures in Kansas and Missouri will not stay freezing normally for long. I've lived through ice storms, been without power for days, I get it.

Do your friends know you can change a flight to leave at a different time?

Lets hope they don't. The fewer Steelers fans there the more room for rabid Chiefs fans

For a fee and not until morning, and the hotel was advance payment no refunds. Check out is at 11 and they have to kill a day in an ice storm. And they will have to pay for another hotel room... and they have to take a vacation day for Monday. Oh, and don't forget all the extra meals now too.

They seriously are thinking of not sinking more money into it and eating their costs (they CAN sell the tickets).

Certainly you would be unhappy to be inconvenienced in that way too!
I know I would.
