The Panthers' defense was good under McDermott. It could have been better. When McDermott chose to implement a "no defense" defense this season, he punched his ticket out of town.

You can put a lot of the blame on the Carolina offense and Cam Newton. Newton is not a top tier NFL QB and last season is something that team won't do again for a while.

Ah yes, that Gus. Side note - I miss Gus Johnson calling NCAA tournament games.

Also, McDermott had to coach against both the league's #1 and #2 offenses, not once, but twice each. Actual track record doesn't actually mean much anyways. Rex had a great track record with defenses. Even his bad Jets teams were always still top 10 defensive teams. But he came to Buffalo and nothing could go right in two years on defense.

Newton and the offense deserves some blame. The Panthers' failed 2016 season falls on the defense. The Panthers will not bottom dwell in the NFC South in 2017.
