The 49ers just probably made the worst choice they could make for their new GM. John Lynch has ZERO front office experience. With a team that is a trainwreck like San Fran, a GM with no experience is not a great hire. I know I'll get the John Elway comparison but Elway had front office experience albeit in the Arena League.

This hire will probably keep San Fran in the basement for a while.

I'll give Lynch the benefit of the doubt for now. I imagine he has picked Elway's brain quite a bit on how to succeed as a good GM given both of them have a Denver Bronco connection.

There are a lot of guys out there with more experience but a lot of that experience is bad experience. At least Lynch can start fresh.

I think most of the blame goes to Jed York. He's made a lot of crappy hires, whether GM or coach other than Jim Harbaugh. We will see of John Lynch is the right move. Hopefully this doesn't end up in a mess in what Matt Millen did in Detroit.

When I heard about this hire, Matt Millen's name came to mind immediately. Let's look at the similarities:

*Both highly regarded #2 color analysts at Fox prior to the announcement
*Both standout defensive players on teams that won the Super Bowl (multiple teams in Millen's case)
*Both retired for roughly 10 years before being named GM
*Both no experience working in an NFL front office prior to being hired as a GM

The 49ers have to hope that Lynch is much more successful than Millen was, or at least if he isn't Lynch isn't kept by the organization as long as Millen was.

Definitely an odd hire. But to be fair, nothing the 49ers do these days should surprise anyone..

San Fran sure has fallen when fans were talking another dynasty after reaching the SB with Colin K. and my how things can change! Franchise is an accident waiting for a place to happen now and we'll have to see what Lynch can do. It is a very strange choice.

Lynch is smarter than the examples given here, Millen/Elway. Does that mean success, no - but given the dire job done by a lot of GMs I think Lynch can do fine. He knows football and the NFL. The train-wreck that is the 49ers could probably use a guy with some smarts.

What do you base him being "smarter" than the examples here? He's got no experience to prove you right, or wrong.

I know there's a connection with Lynch and Mike Shanahan, and I figure there's a connection with Kyle Shanahan as well. KS probably requested that Lynch be his GM if he were to take the head coaching job. Both Shanahan and Lynch are very high on Kirk Cousins, and it could be that Lynch promises to do whatever it took to bring Cousins to the 49ers (although I think Cousins will stay in Washington.) Other than that, it's a risky move based on no front office experience. Usually, I would assume the natural progression into being a GM is to go through the scouting ranks, run the scouting department, and eventually go from there. Let's see how it turns out.
