I am actually glad that the big, expensive stadium in Santa Clara has been such a spectacular failure in every way for the 49ers. Might give other owners pause before they attempt the same.
The LA Coliseum has a much higher capacity than most NFL stadiums. It was always going to be hard to fill.

People will show up in greater numbers for a successful team, but I see the problem a bit differently. Most of the fans going to professional sports, with the possible exception of MLS soccer, are not from the city they are named for. The 49ers, for example, when in SF drew many fans from Marin, Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Driving from Concord or San Rafael to Santa Clara is just too much considering traffic, and the cost of tickets, food and drinks. For the Rams and Chargers, there is the added problem of no established fan base, and that will require 1-2 winning seasons.

The team announced the paid attendance at only 60,000, and those are team figures which usually are inflated. To most the 90.,000 seat stadium appeared half full. Tickets were going for $6. Again this was their first game in their new city when excitement should have been high.
NFL at the Coliseum in '17 is a tough sell. Especially when expectations for the team aren't high. Rams will be okay once the new stadium opens. Chargers, not sure anyone will ever care about the Chargers in LA.

The L.A. Coliseum can hold 90k. Even for a sorry Rams team, getting 60k (which is almost the same capacity as Soldier Field) is still more than what most of the smaller markets fill.
