NFL franchise owners have pushed for an 18 game schedule for years now. With CBA talks now underway, this is once again working its way to the forefront of negotiations. The new proposal features a minor twist: an 18 game schedule which limits players to 16 games.

I'll put my cards on the table now: I hate this idea.

If they want to expand to 18 games, then expand the rosters and add a second bye week for every team and be done with it. Don't water down what are supposed to be meaningful regular season football games by forcing teams to start backups.

Personally I'm not a big fan of the 18 game schedule. I like the symmetry the league has: 16 games, 32 teams and a very logical rotation that makes opponent slates easy to predict years in advance. I imagine the players will not be too thrilled about 18 games, and I hope they can maintain the current, near perfectly balanced methodology.

But if the league does make the change to 18 games, then I hope they make the change without trying to water down the product.

The only two ways I see this happening is shortening preseason games from 4 to two games and giving each team two byes.

I agree, they don't need to expand the regular season.

i also agree that the schedule needs to stay at 16 games. i like that the preseason is four games to give player that would not otherwise make the team to show off their talents, not every player will stay in the NFL you know as teh CFL als needs players.

Just imagine EVERY teams starting quarterbacks would have to sit out TWO games - and I didn't even mention the starting WR's, RB's, DE's, CB's, etc.
What a mess that would be.

Doubt it will happen. The proposal to limit starts will water the games down. Players will rightfully want more money to play more games. Injury risk will be higher. I love the prospect of more NFL but there appears to be too many drawbacks.

The lynch pin to making the schedule expansion work is greater profit sharing with the players. There are other things that are important components (expanded rosters, additional bye weeks) but the money is where it will work or fail. If the owners want 18 games they need to pony up the $$$. The additional games are wildly unpopular with the players but everyone has their price.

It's more likely the playoffs expand to 8 teams per conference before the league approves 18 games.

Its not so much that I'm opposed to 18 games, but limiting players to playing in 16 of them? Idiotic- and too many hypotheticals to list here. And not worth mentioning. Let this dumb idea die a quick death.
