A lot of football is a field position game today. Punters who can consistently give their defense a lot of field to work with by putting down punts inside the 10 make a major contribution to helpin their team. As far as HOF, I can’t think of anyone at punter I’d want in other than guy. Jeff Feagles was legit for a while but nah.

Yeah the same JB that averaged a blazing 3.9 ypc and somehow was bestowed all those honors for below average production.

This is a real HOFer that will get in on longevity:

You mention this part as if Bettis should be proud of those totals over a thirteen years career rather than be embarrassed.

Gore has double the receptions and double the yardage over the same number of seasons.

well since bettis was in fact voted into the hall of fame, he is indeed a hall of famer and there is nothing you or anyone else can do about it

A LOT!!! The actual game itself has to do with field position and a great punter can help your defense.

True, but I'll continue to disparage his name and HOF induction in protest. Especially if more worthy players continue to be left out.

Punting is usually rather mundane, but in certain situations it can change the outcome of a game. I have seen this over the years with the patriots. If a punter has a great long career, they should be in the hall of fame.

Besides Ray Guy is the only punter in the HOF. There are 4 placekickers.

Punting can on rare occasions change the outcome of the game. When those occasions arise, it very possibly could be achieved by an average punter.

Interesting article on the Rams Punter Johnny Hekker. NFL MVP?

https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/02/s...ms-punter.html

Quote:
Since entering the N.F.L. in 2012, Hekker, 27, has come to dominate as a punter like few others. He confounds opponents by marrying distance, direction and hang time to smash records, last year compiling what is regarded as the best punting season in N.F.L. history. He broke his own mark for net average, with 46.0 yards per kick, and dropped 51 punts inside the 20-yard line with only one touchback, a ratio that the Rams’ special-teams coach, John Fassel, described as “just stupid.”
