Ray Guy is in the pro football Hall of Fame. He was a great punter but no punter should be in the Hall of Fame. They do not make a big enough difference. The average game sees 5 punts for each team. If one team has the best punter in the league, and the other team has an average punter, the difference in yardage is 10-15 yards. A good running back or wide receiver would make a bigger difference when compared to the average running back or wide receiver. With that criteria, Mark Brunell and Frank Wycheck should be in the Hall.

I believe that every position should be given the opportunity to be exceptional in some way, which would ultimately place them in the HoF. That recognition should not only be for every other position in pro football.

Exactly, if you play you deserve a spot in the HoF. Heck they let owners and GMs in the HoF. I mean Jerry Jones?! haha I'll take Ray Guy over him any day of the week.

Your getting into the area where some players playing some postions have minimal value and have scant little influence on the game. Do you put into the baseball Hall of Fame the player who was the best pinch hitter in Major League history?

If that's what a HoF decides to do, why not? It should be about an accomplishment by any position.

Baseball (or football) purists, boosters or rabid fanatics shouldn't be deciding what enables placement into any HoF.

How many times have we seen a game won by a successful punt...????

especially one that rolled out on the one yard line from 50 yards away? or how many times have punt returns been negated because of hang times more than 5 seconds? even after a 50-60 yard punt that normally outstrips the coverage?

or how about a punter that regularly put the ball down inside the ten yard line, or regularly boots a punt 60 yards?

in the end every player on the team can make great plays, and if one does it often enough then they should have a shot at the hall of fame, even if they are "only" a punter. HOF players are HOF players as long as the HOF says they are.

More times than many realize. The game is a process and many acts contribute to a victory.

Guy is considered to have revolutionized the position. As such he was enshrined for his contributions. The routine punt that seems mundane today, modeled after Guy, was not routine in his time.
