Just saw on the TV schedule that the Bears will play the Ravens on Thursday.

What is the purpose of the Hall of Fame game? Does it decide something? I somehow missed this in previous years. Hope it's not like the pro bowl where they mostly goof off instead of playing to win.

It's just the traditional kickoff to the NFL pre-season. Played at the historical 'home' of football, Canton, OH.

Generally considered part of the celebration of the kickoff of a new season and the enshrinement of the latest batch of HoFers.

Basically a meaningless game, other than it's probably one of the few nationally televised pre-season games. It probably would better be considered more a scrimmage than a preseason game. Starters generally only play a series or two.

Okay so it counts as one of their 4 preseason games?

since 1978 they have been playing 4 exhibition games with two teams playing a fifth at the HOF game.

in 1970 the NFL was given an anti-trust exemption and the owners took advantage and increased the preseason to 6 games and were not required (and still aren't) to pay the players for these exhibition games. This 6 game schedule lasted until 1977 when the season was expanded from 14 to 16 games.

This anti-trust exemption and the revenue generated (and not shared with the players) is why the league has resisted all attempts to cut back the exhibition season.

It's just sort of a bonus. The players and coaches get an all-expenses-paid trip to lovely Canton, Ohio.

It is a light appetizer, a chance for fans like Colt, Susan and myself to whet our hunger for football which we have not tasted for 6 months. We get to taste the first snacks at the table knowing that the season is little more than a month away.

Yep, I'll be watching for a little while at least! First glimpse of one of the Packers opponents.

8 tonite, Colt. My son reminded me last night that today is the Old Lady's birthday. So we need to have a meal and snacks for her
Also she hates football
So if it is on the tv it will be with the sound off and when she is not in the room.
