An interesting article from the Ringer.

On a deeper level it makes me wonder if the NFL is evolving toward a more deep passing league. All the rule changes for years seemed to have been focused on making offense more the focus of the game leading to more passing and especially the short passing game. With the latest rule changes almost placing the quarterback in a no hit bubble and the emphasis on helmet to helmet contact and lowering the helmet to initiate contact is the league going to move to more of a deep passing league. With all the roughing the QB calls already on plays that would have been non penalties just last year will there be more time for offences to develop more deep routes as pass rushers now must worry about how and where they're hitting the QB? It seems that this must slow up the rush even if only half a second or so. There was a time where the prevailing thought among NFL head coaches was that when passing there were three possible outcomes and two of them were negative. It seems like now that thought might be evolving to now when passing there are five possible outcomes and three of them are positive. The rule changes have added defensive pass interference and roughing the passer as almost as equal a positive outcome as a completion to a pass play. And it seems the deeper the pass play the higher the odds of those two outcomes happening.
