You wanna talk about a tough SOB. I saw a thing about him where players swore he ate glass before games to get fired up, I very much doubt that but a tougher SOB would be harder to find.

Tough yes, but Lambert wasn't even the best LB on his own team, Jack Ham was better.

All great picks so far. Jack Ham, I used to watch him, waiting for him to show a fallibility, not that I really wanted to see it; like most of us I'm quite bias in my case in favor of the Pittsburgh Steelers, and I think in all the games I saw Jack Ham in, I saw him do it once! Miss a tackle that is. What a team, those 1970's Pittsburgh Steelers.

I'm not saying Dan Connors was the best of all time, but as middle linebacker for the Oakland Raiders from 1964-1975, he was very underrated. And WilF, he played for yout hometown college team, the Miami Hurricanes.

I remember Dan Conners well, been following the AFL since day one! Been meaning to post some other linebackers from that era from that other league, the American Football League. Here's some that were damn good LB's; Nick Buoniconti(Boston Patriots and Miami Dolphins), Bobby Bell (Kansas City Chiefs), George Webster (Houston Oilers), Willie Lanier (kansas City Chiefs).

Dick Butkus,he had the best tackling style of any linebacker I have ever seen. He would hit you straighten you up and knock you backwards. He had the love of the game like none others,he lived the game a real passion for it,knew how to drive a shoulder in to a runner and let him feel his presence out on the field of play.

Singletary has my vote, Butkus runner-up. Those guys were more than just physical specimens. Smart players who could out-think when they couldn't out-muscle/run.

I honestly think Zach Thomas is a darkhorse candidate in this debate. Probably the smartest linebacker to ever play the game.

L.T. redefined the role of the modern linebacker and is widely regarded by fans, players, and coaches as the best to ever play the position. I'd give Ray Lewis #2, he was terrifying for about five years. I just have a hard time thinking the old school players could compete, the players over the last twentyfive years are bigger, faster, stronger, and smarter.

The guy Fatso is talking about, the "Iron Horse" Bill Pellington, BALTIMORE Colts, not the Phony Geldings.
