Wasn't Shanahan 36 years old when he started with the Raiders?
Regardless of age, McDaniels will do a great job with the Broncos offense. If he can turn Matt Cassel into a 3600 yd passer with a completion percentage of 63 then I think he'll do wonders with the Broncos offense. More importantly, I think the Broncos need a veteran defensive coordinator and Mike Nolan definitely fits the bill. Like him or hate him, Bill Belichek is a great mentor for a young coach to have.
He was 36 years old, correct! There is kind of an interesting story about that!
Once upon a time the Oakland/L.A. Raiders were a factor in the AFC West division. They won the Super Bowl in 1983, and went to the AFC championship in 1985. In 1986 and 1987 Denver went to the Super Bowl as a 4th year quarterback John Elway was starting to mature.
I 'm not sure whether Tom Flores resigned or was fired after the 1987 season. One thing for sure, Al Davis took his time picking out a future head coach. The perception by the Denver media was that if the Raiders couldn't beat Denver, then raid their staff. Shanahan was signed in early March. Usually NFL clubs try to get the new people in place, the sooner the better. I believe Davis knew what he was doing.
I have no problem with the selection of Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator. I think it will be a good fit. He learned a lot from his dad Dick Nolan, a former head coach and an all-pro DB with the New York Giants.
A quick note on Belechick. Bronco head coach Red Miller gave Bill Belichick his first start as a defensive coach in the NFL. He was a defensive assistant under Miller in 1978.
John McDaniels was fired 06 Dec 2010, a rather short tenure.

If I was a betting man I would say secondary coach Ed Donatell. Respected with the defense, very respected with the secondary. UPDATE: Am streaming KOA right now. Running backs coach Eric Studesville has been named interim coach for the remaining four games of the season.
Not sure what type of reputation he has....I've watched all of three games this year-one of them was yesterday....I was so P*&ed I pouted the rest of the day-but the football god has answered my prayer.

He's largely credited with developing Tiki Barber.

Let's see;
-run off a starting-caliber QB, a game-changing WR, and a solid TE with your attitude
-trade a CB you gave up a 1st rd pick for after 1 year only to have him flourish in Detroit
- trade a good starting RB and be 29th in rushing after you do it; not even try to develop the QB you traded him for
-make bad personnel choices including a 1st rd QB (who should have never been picked there) when you already have a good QB under 30 under contract
-get busted for videotaping another team's practice.
I'm surprised he lasted this long.
