Out of the typical 2 hours and 54 minutes of the average NFL broadcast, a whole 11 minutes actually feature live game action. So next time you want to call out soccer or baseball fans for following a sport where nothing happens, you might want to tend to your own garden.
The difference is actual progress can be charted in an American football game. You can anticipate when a team is about to score in American football. You can observe the strategy. It's not random chance where the ball ends up. Either the QB threw a long pass or a great run was executed. In soccer, it just seems to be pure luck and random chance. I know there is strategy in soccer but it's not easy to identify. Who wants to watch a game in which the score is 2-1 in which 99% of the time, the ball is just aimlessly kicked back and forth. I really can't recognize who is a better soccer player on a field aside from the fact that some players are much faster than others. I'm sorry I guess I'm too American but I don't get soccer.
There is only 21 minutes of programming in a half hour sitcom.
Yanks don't understand soccer and don't want to. I don't make fun of soccer fans cause I am not a jingoistic jerk but admit that I find it boring and football more appealing.

It's true. I have no interest in understanding soccer. My schedule is busy enough with football, basketball, baseball and hockey. I don't understand NASCAR either nor do I care to understand that "sport" either. If you are a serious fan of these sports, there is just not enough time in the day to follow other sports. To be honest, I have a tough time following even these 4 sports in detail. I feel like it's a struggle to watch them.
Despite deadspin.com, the truth is that a football game consists of 60 minutes of playing time. Time outs (the majority of which are directly related to television concerns) and challenges to calls result in most of the wasted minutes.
Given that, I certainly won't argue against the fact that it shouldn't take 2 hours and 54 minutes to play a football game.
The sport has been overly commercialized with the all the cross marketing nonsense. The Faith Hill introduction at the start of the broadcast is hideous. Having awful bands like Three Doors Down and Daughtry play halftime shows is also a disturbing trend.
For those of us that played football, we know that we couldn't possibly keep up that pace for 60 straight minutes. (it was a 48 minute game back in high school)
Besides, the game is much more than a bunch of 8 second plays thrown together. I s'pose folks could say the same thing about baseball.
Gotta love hockey though. Changing shifts on the fly?
