jim brown played 9 seasons, at 14 games a season, retired as the all-time leading rusher and is still in the top ten all-time. if that doesn't make him a great player, then i don't know what does.
One important name you left off is Troy Aikman, his Superbowl rings and clutch play cannot be ignored. His playoff and Suberbowl passer rating is near flawless. He definitely deserves to be on there over a guy like Troy Polamalu.
Growing up in the 1960's, my two favorite wide receivers were Lance Alworth of the San Diego Chargers and Raymond Berry of the Baltimore Colts. Both were HOF inductees in the early 70's.
Somewhere on the net here I ran into a cool article on Lance describing his battles with Willie Brown, HOF def. back of the Oakland Raiders. When asked how he felt about Jerry Rice, he stated "Rice is in a class by himself."
I had the privilege of meeting Raymond Berry at a Denver area card show in the early 90's. Very good guy, very classy guy. As he was signing autographs, the guy ahead of me in line asked Raymond what he thought of Jerry Rice. Raymond stated, "He'll own all the pass receiving records by the time he retires. He has just as much a hard work ethic as myself, but he has so much natural ability to go with it." This was in 1992.
Both guys were right. Rice is the best wide receiver so far in NFL history and the stats bear that out. The Sporting News came out with a hardback book earlier this decade titled The Greatest 100 Players in NFL History. I believe Jerry Rice is rated number 6 (I don't have the book but have read it).
Barry Sanders was an extremly entertaining football player, but he could also hurt his team too. I remember he played a playoff game against Green Bay and ended the game with negative rushing yards. This is not something you would expect from the greatest player ever....

Good QB on a stacked team. Definitely not even close to best even at his position. Polamalu is better at his.

What? An off game? He also had a crappy team and was a one man offense. He is one of very few that can say he singlehandedly won games for his team.

Barry Sanders was the only reason Detroit won games, he didn't have blockers or a quarterback... anyone remember scott mitchell? get out of here.. there is no runningback that will ever come close to barry sanders.
