We've done a lot of building work over the past 24 months, and this Black & Decker variable speed hammer drill has been a God-send.
Having used countless Black & Decker tools, we opted for the brand because it is competitively priced and perfect for DIY projects. In fact it is cheaper than most other hammer drills, but has the reliability of the brand. The other factor was that it can be used to drill into a range of different materials, including wood, metal, tough plastic, masonry and hardened concrete.
For years we have used less powerful drills for tasks like hanging cupboards, assembling wooden units and simply making holes in the wall for bookshelves and other fixtures and fittings.
We have found that we can use this drill for similar tasks, but that it is brilliant when it comes to drilling through brick walls and concrete. We had a concrete slab and needed to drill holes for steel anchor fittings so we could erect a timber pergola structure. It took so little effort it was amazing, enabling us to get the upright posts in position in record time. We also used it to drill a hole through the wall for an electrical connection.
What we like best about this particular Black & Decker drill is that it takes a lot less effort than the other drills we have previously used. It's got a 910 watt motor that is high powered and has the torque to be able to manage heavy-duty jobs. Its two mechanical gears let you use the high speed and the high torque together. It also has a reversing action that provides torque as well as high power in both the forward and reverse movements.
Other features include a one-piece half inch (or 13 mm) high quality keyless chuck that makes it a lot easier and quicker to change bits. There is also an auto-spindle lock which enables the person using the drill to close the chuck tighter, which helps to prevent the bit from slipping. A depth guide is incorporated to set a predetermined drilling depth.
While this hammer drill is very powerful, it has an adjustable speed control system with pre-set speeds that can be used for drill press work and other applications that don't need maximum power. The variable speed is particularly useful when utilizing the drill for screw driving, because it gives a lot more control. A secondary handle also increases the amount of control you have while using the drill.
It comes supplied in a handy kit box which is great because you can keep your drill safe together with all your drill bits and other accessories. Like all other Black & Decker products, it carries a two-year manufacturer's warranty.
