Xerox Phaser 8560DN Color Solid Ink Printer

Rating: 4 out of 5
  • Currently 4.0/5.0

Having owned a Xerox Phaser 7400, I was interested in what the 8560 model might have to offer in the way of improvements. The biggest difference in the style of the machine is the toner cartridges. The 7400 uses the large expensive toner cartridges that cost $1240 a set for the Xerox brand ($370 for generic compatibles). The 8560 uses small cartridges costing about $360 for the Xerox brand set.

I was anxious to see if the 8560 would be cheaper to operate than the 7400 from the standpoint of the cartridges. The small cartridges only make 3,400 prints, while the 7400 cartridges yield approximately 18,000. Doing the math, it would cost over $1,800 for the 8560 to produce as many prints as the 7400.

Even though the 8560 costs more to make prints, it is faster than the 7400, producing 30 pages per minute. It doesn't take as long to get the first page off the printer, either. I couldn't tell any noticeable difference in the quality of the prints between machines. The 7400 is a bigger machine than the 8560, but it also costs over three times as much.

Anyone who already owns the 7400 should probably stay with it as long as it serves the purpose it is needed for. The newer model will cost more to operate, but it can be bought for under $1,000, and the difference in cost between the two will buy a lot of toner. It is also possible to find the printer on sale at reduced prices, up to $400 off, if you shop around.

I am impressed with the speed and quality of the 8560DN, and it is still makes great reproductions of color pictures. You can get the cartridges through third party suppliers for about 1/3 the cost of the Xerox brand, making it much more affordable to operate. Other brands might be comparable, but this is a very good addition to the Xerox line of printers.
