The TomTom GO 740TM LIVE 4.3-Inch Bluetooth Portable GPS Navigator (Lifetime Traffic & Maps Edition) may not be one of TomTom's most popular GPS navigation systems, and perhaps, for good reasons. This TomTom GPS model has a number of impressive features, the most impressive being the Lifetime Traffic and Maps, which guarantee continual updates: map updates 4 times per year and traffic updates every 3 minutes. This is, I think, the biggest selling point of the device, however it doesn't make up for the unfortunate issues experienced with this GPS navigator.
The LIVE services that come with this TomTom GPS system include TomTom traffic, safety camera alerts, weather, fuel prices, and Local Search which is powered by Google. Unfortunately, the most flawed of all of these LIVE services is the TomTom traffic which kept reverting to the demo mode and thus interfering with continuous use of the device. This could become a big issue when you are depending on your GPS navigator for directions. The LIVE services are another big selling point of this TomTom GPS navigation system, but unfortunately, they don't live up to the hype.
TomTom's customer service is also very difficult to get through to, and does not prove to be much help once you do, yet another major flaw. With all of these downfalls of this TomTom GO 740TM GPS navigation system, the device does pack in some convenient features, that so far seem to be working correctly, such as voice recognition that allows you to speak instructions to the device, Bluetooth compatibility of hands-free calling with your mobile phone, spoken turn by turn directions, TomTom Advanced Lane Guidance which help you know which lane is best to take and reduce the chance or risky lane changes, and IQ Routes Technology to calculate the fastest route at any time of the day, as traffic patterns change.
Although the latter mentioned features prove to be helpful, it doesn't make up for the problems with the LIVE services and the lousy customer support. Offered at $269.00, many other portabble GPS navigators with lower price tags prove to outsell this flawed device.
