When my church's office copier finally died a horrible, wheezing death over the last fall, they decided to replace it with something that would not be too expensive to keep up, but could also handle multiple copying jobs quickly, especially heavy volumes of newsletters, forms and other bulletins that would need copying. They ended up purchasing a Xerox Phaser 3300MFPX Multifunction Printer to replace the old copier. It was purchased for $700, which makes it one of the lower end of Xerox copiers that can run anywhere from $1,000 to $5,000 depending on how fancy it is and how many features it has. Since the church office didn't feel like it had much need for multiple trays of different sized paper and stapling and flipping of pages features, they felt this lower end model would suit their needs, and budget just fine.
The device can copy in color as well as act as a color fax machine. It has a built in modem at 33.6K and can print in regular paper, card paper and labels, all of which are features the church uses the device for. It can handle multiple sizes of paper, from legal and letter to folio sizes. It is supported by both Mac and PC, although the church makes use of a PC itself, so I don't know how well it works with a Mac. With a PC, it works flawlessly. It connects to the PC via USB for quick interfacing, and comes with software for operation. Another good feature about it, although not a technical one, is it has an energy star rating, for those concerned about the environmental impact. It also lessens its impact on the environment by making use of only one print cartridge, capable of thousands of prints, and rarely in need of replacement even after several batches of heavy printing.
Xerox's customer service is quite helpful if you have any problems setting the device up or troubleshooting the first few print jobs, as we had. The device is small for a Xerox but still heavy and difficult to maneuver into place. We required two people to get it where we wanted it. The print quality is pretty good, although obviously not of professional photographic quality. It is serviceable, however. The ability to scan would have been nice, as the office does make use of a separate scanner that will have to be replaced soon. But the unit works nicely for what it was purchased to do.
