Whirlpool 9.7 Top Mount Refrigerator

Rating: 4 out of 5
  • Currently 4.0/5.0

After the last hurricane in our area caused several of our appliances to go haywire, we decided that it was time for us to replace our fifteen year old refrigerator with something more sturdy and energy efficient. We headed down to the nearest Lowe's store and started comparing models. We decided on a Whirlpool 9.7 cubic foot top mount refrigerator, in the color silver. Our first reason for selecting this model had to do with space limitations. It seemed that since our house had been built, refrigerator/freezer combination units have gotten bigger, and thus we were limited on which models would fit in our kitchen. This model fitted with just inches to spare in the small alcove for the refrigerator. We also chose it for its color, as we have decided to begin replacing such appliances as the refrigerator, stove and microwave in silver and attempt to have the kitchen look more uniform.

The features of this model are also what attracted us to it. For starters, it has an Energy Star rating, making it certified energy efficient. Since we have purchased the refrigerator, we have observed a noticeable decrease in our energy consumption, as well as less loss of cool from the unit due to a better rate of insulation. The doors can be set to open from either right or left, making it slightly customizable to various kitchen layouts. The temperature controls are easy to set and the unit also contains a small thermometer that allows the owner to monitor that the food in the refrigerator is staying below 40F degrees. There are separate drawers for fruits and vegetables, and a lunch meat and cheese drawer around the middle of the unit. There is a separate space for butter on the door and the shelves on the door are quite roomy.

The freezer is not as spacious as other models, though it keeps food frozen quite nicely and is roomy enough for a small family to stock up well enough. The unit does not have a water or ice dispenser, though the ice maker is efficient, prolific and hardly makes a sound. The owner of this model can throw away the old ice cube trays! The refrigerator is a comfortable price of about $399 at Lowe's, which is one of the cheaper models, in comparison with some of Whirlpool's other models that can range up to $900, but sport many other features such as water and crush ice dispensers and more drawers. After three years the unit has proven to be quite reliable and has not been in need of any repair. There is a five year warranty from the company, though Lowe's also offers its own warranty as an add-on to the price. We have been very pleased with the Whirlpool refrigerator.
