The Cuisinart Immersion blender is hand held, with a plastic handle and stainless steel blender. I was first drawn to the Cuisinart because I heard that I was powerful, with a 200 watt motor that beats most hand held blenders, and because the metal parts to the blender are metal they're easier to clean than plastic. It's easy to hold and the perfect size, measuring just over 14 inches long and 3 inches across, without being too heavy at 2.2 pounds. The model that I bought is finished in brushed chrome, which makes the Cuisinart look much better than those with plastic finishes.
At first the Cuisinart appeared to be living up to its name by blending almost any food type that I could stick it in. I was particularly fond of the splatter guard that surrounds the blade like a bell to avoid splashing blended food all over your kitchen. However, the Cuisinart very quickly started making strange noises and then stopped working altogether. I have since discovered that this is a common problem with the Cuisinart hand blender range, which is built using some metal and some plastic parts. While the actually metal blender can be detached and is dishwasher safe, the handle is only wiped clean, and after time the plastic parts degraded and broke.
The Cuisinart lasted nearly 4 months before breaking down, which isn't as long as it sounds as obviously most people don't blend every day. While it works, it's one of the most powerful and effective hand blenders that you can buy, but until Cuisinart fix this defect and use metal parts, you may have to replace it very quickly. If you pay the $55.00 that the Cuisinart costs, what was at first a reasonable price to pay for a high-tech gadget will become an overly expensive mistake.
