The MSR Hubba Hubba is part of a generation of extremely lightweight backpacking tents that can be assembled in minutes without having to read any instructions. Its aluminum poles unhinge at various points along their length, but they are never truly separated. Putting them together simply entails extending the poles and joining the press-fit connectors, then placing the end of the pole into a grommet, sliding it through the sleeves, and attaching the other end of the pole through the grommet on the opposite side. The tent assumes its shape through the tension of the poles. In case of high winds, stakes can be pushed in through the second grommet on the tabs.
The end result, once it's assembled, is slightly longer than wide (84 inches x 50 inches). With a 29 square foot floor area, it holds two people and their gear comfortably. A full-sized inflatable mattress fits inside for maximum sleeping comfort. This tent comes with not one, but two vestibules, which measures 17.5 sq. ft. each. They come in handy if you want to keep your boots and gear out of the sleeping area, or if you're traveling with your dog and want him to be in the tent, and yet separate. But the vestibules can be unzipped and left behind if you're trying to minimize weight. The total tent weight when it's packed up is 4 lbs. 6 oz, which means it's not the lightest backpacking tent on the market. There are others that are about a pound lighter.
The best part about this tent is the all-mesh see-through nylon fabric that allows you to star gaze while remaining completely protected from biting insects. Should a rainstorm roll in, the rain fly offers total protection from the elements and is easy to assemble quickly. It's also possible to use the rain fly in partially open mode so that you can enjoy the storm without getting wet, and not feel completely closed in.
When the yellow rain fly is on, the tent is very visible to other campers, but when it's in its mesh mode, the tent blends in with the landscape.
There are two entrances, which is a nice feature so that you don't have to climb over your camping partner to exit the tent. The height of the tent is 40 inches, which allows plenty of headroom.
The tent repair kit is sold separately, which is one downside to this product. Other tents offer the repair kit as part of the package. Fortunately, the tent is made of durable rip-stop nylon and the floor has a polyurethane coating, so unless some accident occurs, it should be expected to last a long time without needing repairs.
The suggested retail price of this tent $329.95, which is comparable to others of its type.
