Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500 Feed Scanner

Rating: 3 out of 5
  • Currently 3.0/5.0

The Fujitsu ScanSnap caters for people who want things scanned, and they want them now. With up to 20 pages per minute, with the Fujitsu you're paying $595.00 for speed and usability, with a simple interface that makes it easy to scan high volumes in a short time.
Unlike flatbed scanners, the Fujitsu takes sheets of paper through the top of the machine and scans them as it feeds them through and returns them at the other side. It detects the size of the document that you're feeding into the machine and can be set to automatically adjust the resolution and focus to avoid losing any information or quality, which is particularly useful if, like me, you want to stuff a handful of papers and envelopes into the feed and let the scanner get to work.
The S1500 is primarily a scanner to be used for written documents, where attention to detail in terms of scanning quality only needs to be enough to ensure you have retained all the information. If you're looking for a high quality scanner to pick up image detail or to scan in artistic work, the S1500's maximum resolution of 300dpi won't be enough, and neither will the color quality.
The S1500 is perfect for scanning an entire office worth of papers and documents in just one day if you've suddenly decided to go digital, although through experience I wouldn't give the scanner more than 20 to 30 pages at once, despite the 50 page Automatic Document Feeder as it occasionally gets stuck, especially when feeding out when the papers sometimes become jammed. However, it's a very reasonable price for a quick and efficient machine, even if the scanner itself isn't particularly aesthetically pleasing, and there's no question that the S1500 will save you a lot of time.
