Catalina 375 - 37.5 ft. Sailboat

Rating: 5 out of 5
  • Currently 5.0/5.0

The Catalina 375 was first introduced in January 2008 by Catalina Yachts, which has long had a reputation for providing well-designed, quality yachts to the sailing community. It is an ideal choice for sailing U.S. coastal waters, the intercoastal waterway (ICW), the Gulf of Mexico, and/or the Bahamas. Its optional 4'8" wing keel (recommended) is a perfect fit for the waters of the Chesapeake Bay and the ICW. The sailor will be able to keep enough water under his boat and can go gunkholing where deeper-draft boats will go aground. Its 54-foot mast will allow it to pass under the many fixed bridges on the ICW without having to wait for low tide.

The spacious cockpit of the Catalina 375 is just the thing when it comes to relaxing and/or entertaining. It features a folding table that opens up to provide a large eating area. Some might find the standard helm too encumbering, but this can easily be replaced with a third-party, optional helm that folds into itself. The below-deck area is made for comfort, too. Headroom is a generous 6'9". The owner's cabin is forward and features a sizeable v-berth with an inner spring mattress. The oversized head with a large shower area is adjacent the owner's cabin. A large athwartships berth is located aft and is also supplied with an inner spring mattress. The salon area features a folding dining table, which mounts to the bulkhead when not in use to allow the crew more room to move around. The game table in the salon area converts to an extra berth. The galley is outfitted with a 2-burner propane stove and a 13" x 14" x 15" gimbaled oven. All interior trim is solid teak. The sole is laminate. There are ample handholds below deck for the crew to grab onto when the ride gets rough.

This boat has a displacement of 16,500, with a ballast of 6,200. Its sails are large enough and balanced enough to move the boat along in the 7-knot range while still being manageable enough such that the average sailor will not feel overpowered. The rigging and deck hardware is oversized for greater reliability in offshore conditions. Catalina sailboats, in general, point upwind better than most other sailboats, and the Catalina 375 is no exception. She sails very well.

This Catalina model has a 40-hp Yanmar diesel engine, which is powerful enough to maintain a reasonable cruising speed when the wind dies and to make proper headway against tides and cross currents. It will allow the captain and crew to motor comfortably and safely along. The boat's fuel capacity of 40 gallons provides 32 hours of motoring at 1.25 gallons an hour. While this should be enough for coastal cruising, the captain may want to add a Gerry jug or two for offshore sails. The boat is designed to carry 97 gallons of fresh water and has one 31-gallon holding tank.

Most crew will find that the boat's 10 lb. propane tank provides approximately 5 weeks of use. This is adequate for the weekender or the occasional coastal cruiser, but it is definitely inadequate for those who plan to take extended cruises. Another 10 lb. tank is a requirement under these conditions, unless a diet of canned tuna and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches is attractive to the crew.

This Catalina model has generous storage capacity, both in the cockpit area and below deck. A new, 2010, Catalina 375 is selling for $241,000. This is its "sail-away" price, which means it is basically ready to go, outfitted with all the necessary equipment as well as some desirable options that will allow the buyer to raise the sails and begin his voyage. It is higher-priced than some other boats that may appear similar, but that are simply not built as solidly as the Catalina. The biggest negatives that this boat has are its single 10 lb. propane tank and its 2-burner stove--and these are only negatives for those wanting to use the boat for extended cruising.

Great review. I have a 375 and we love her for meeting our family needs. People buy boats to hopefully fit their needs. This is a great get away boat. With three daughters and limited time we find our 375 is perfect. I am basically a single handed sailor and even with a tone rotator cuff, I was able to handle her just fine. We purchased her in Philly and with only a crew of three were able to deliver her in 25 hours to Barneget Bay in 24 hours. We did run low on propane, however there is a second compartment, on the port side, that is designed for a second tank. Again, for our family and all their many friend, the the perfect boat.
