Dye DM8 Marker Paintball gun

Rating: 5 out of 5
  • Currently 5.0/5.0

Not long ago when we took up paintball, we knew we were had limited knowledge of the guns and opted to get what other people at our local field were using. I ended up purchasing a Tipmann A-5, a pump gun, but my husband wanted a different gun. The most common and reliable semi-automatic paintball gun on the market has historically been the Dye DM8 Marker. It can be found in sporting goods stores and paintball shops everywhere. The design closely mirrors the design of the Tipmann Spyder, one of the first guns on the market and is a reliable design. Indeed, many newcomers to the market copied the Spyder's design, making it the most recognizable design of paintball gun around. It is highly affordable, reliable, easy to clean and great for beginners.

My husband purchased a Dye DM8, which cost about $600 at the time of its release, but can currently be found for around $60-$80 less. It has an aluminum body, making it lightweight and durable and not prone to breaking as some guns with plastic casings can easily do. It can be dropped into mud, water or pretty much anything and still fire. It runs a steel line to the bottom of the grip for connection to CO2 canisters, although it can also be connected near the top as well. We prefer the top connection, because the bottom connection via the line makes the gun unbalanced and difficult to carry without a strap. There is an external velocity adjuster for keeping the gun safe and game-legal under the 90mph speed for firing limit. It can also operate on CO2 or compressed air, or remote CO2 lines.

There are a wide variety of barrels available for it, and my husband prefers a longer, sniper style barrel. The gun is a little bit louder than most other guns when it fires, although some barrels minimize this, and the sound is not so loud that an opponent can easily pinpoint you. The biggest problem with this gun is that it is not very accurate with the included barrel, and like most semi autos invites the user to hit his opponent by wasting paint and spraying an area hoping to hit something rather than real accuracy. Also, if you are reusing paint or using cheap paint, the gun will suffer a lot of jams and explosions in the barrel, requiring a lot of cleaning. On the other hand, it is easily upgradeable and some people have rebuilt their Dyes with higher end barrels, bolts and laser sights, making them much more accurate and competitive. It is inexpensive and reliable and almost never breaks. As long as the user keeps it clean, changes the O-rings and oils it after use, this gun will last a long time. It is a great gun for beginners.
