I always thought metal detectors tacky, until my son and his friend found a gold Rolex while zooming up and down the beach with friend's toy detector. Not only that they found the watch, but they had so much fun that I decided to get one for our family. I did some research and found out that there is huge range of machines, some really complex and expensive, others simple and cheap. I bought The Bounty Hunter Tracker IV because it was advertized as great for beginners, and we are definitively beginners.

The Bounty Hunter is extremely easy to use, we barely had to go through the manual. It is very light (less than 3 pounds) and it has nice adjustable, padded arm support, which works for kids and adults.

There is no need for any adjustment depending on the type of ground and soil conditions, which I understand used to be the most complicated part of using this machine. This one does everything for you. It has touch pad controls and one mode switch.
The digital display is big and clear and has a depth indicator, which tells you how much you have to dig to find the item that your machine has detected. It has sound indicator with three different tones. Although the detector has its own speaker, it works better with the headphones. It requires two 9 volts batteries.

The machine is waterproof, so the kids can look for sunken treasures as well, with their snorkels.

I bought this detector for $129.95 at the www.metaldetector.com since I did not know who sells them, and I think it is worth it for the money. Kids enjoy it very much, and we can relax on the beach without having to entertain them. If they ever find something valuable, we might replace this detector with something more sophisticated and go digging for gold. So far, we mostly find buried beer cans.
