GE GSD1000 24" Built-In Dishwasher

Rating: 1 out of 5
  • Currently 1.0/5.0

One of General Electric's cheapest dishwasher models, and one of the cheapest on the market. Unfortunately in this case, you get exactly what you pay for.

First, credit where it's due: This machine has a large capacity and its two dish racks are well laid out and can easily accommodate a wide variety of dish shapes and sizes. The machine is easy to operate (just turn the dial to the desired setting and away it goes) and the wash cycle is relatively quick.

Sadly, that's where the pros of this unit end. I have owned one of these machines for a scant two years (included in the purchase of our new house) and it has never performed properly. It does a very poor job of cleaning anything but the easiest messes off dishes, and everything must be thoroughly rinsed prior to being put in the machine, or it will almost inevitably come out uncleaned. I also found that the dishes must be arranged in a very specific manner, or entire sections of dishes will not clean properly.

Further, while in operation this dishwasher is the absolute noisiest I have ever owned. Even brand new it made an absolute racket even on the lightest wash setting. The noise is so intrusive that we are forced to make extra effort to only run it when we're leaving the house, as the noise otherwise disturbs our TV watching, sleep and other activities.

As if that were not bad enough, the detergent cup (while easy to open and load) never closes properly and leaks terribly. Additionally, the lower dish rack has a tendency to pop off its track and become stuck, requiring extensive jiggling to persuade it back into place.

In all, this machine is far more headache than it's worth and far superior models are available without stretching the budget much farther. I cannot wait to replace this dishwasher.
