- I have a friend. She had a car accident a few years ago and now she's very afraid of driving to work, so she just rides her bicycle to work, she doesn't like buses. I don't want her to continue like this because it takes her about 30 minutes to ride to work. That sounds so hard and tiring! I have also encouraged her to drive to work again many times but she didn't dare to. How can I encourage her to drive to work again?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I wouldn't try to talk her out of commuting by bike. There are lot's of health benefits to riding your bicycle an hour a day. If she's content, let her be. When she's ready to drive again I'm sure she'll get back behind the wheel on her own terms. For now, maybe offer her rides to places to get her accustomed to being in a car again, even if it's as a passenger.

I ride by bike 30 minutes each way every single day, all year long. I do it because it clears my head, gives me time alone, and it keeps me physically fit. Why don't you let the woman ride her bike and MYOB?

If you want to be really helpful suggest she find a therapist who works with people with this problem - phobias.

Simply avoiding what gives you extreme anxiety is one way to cope - like she's already doing. But her life would be happier if she just didn't have her irrational fear of driving begin with.

So are you more concerned about her riding a bike for an hour a day rather than her actual fear of driving?

I agree that she need to work on her fear of driving but not because she's riding a bike for an hour a day.

I don't drive, and I'm perfectly fine. There really isn't a need to drive.

Riding a bike? Forget that! If it were me, I'd encourage her to lace up those running shoes and kill two birds with one stone. Running to work would not only get her to the job, but it would also enable her to get her daily workout in. You can't beat that combo.

I agree as well. Riding a bike isn't a problem, but getting over her fear would be a good idea.

If I could bike half an hour each way to and from work, I definitely would. What great daily exercise.

And riding her bike isn't a workout?
