I made a similar thread in the retirement forum but that was geared more towards senior citizens. Much love and respect to them. But now I wanted to ask everyone here (who is of all ages and walks of life), do you believe people change? And I'm not talking about lifestyle change. From drugs to clean or bad student to college graduate or meat-eater to vegan. None of that. I'm talking about personality wise. Their base person. Who are they are and who they've shown themselves to be. Do you believe our personalities change after a specific age or time in our life? Has your OWN personality changed since you were young? Have you noticed any personality change in your family or friends? Describe your personality and your temperament and those who you've grown up with and how they've changed or not changed over the years. Please feel free to include any class reunion stories.

Yes, people definitly do change. Somtimes, the good get gooder. But then what happens with that is that sometimes the gooder they are, the harder they fall. Or no wait, it's not the gooder, it's, umm. Pardon me! Ya ever have one of those senior moments kinda race by ya? Whoops, there one goes again!

What I think I mean is that yes, I do believe that people in many ways do change as the years fly by. And, depending on what restaurant I go to or what movie theater I go to, I'm one of those who is a current recipient of your love and respect. Whipersnapper.

Yes, I do believe that people change. But I dont believe that it can happen over night. I think it takes some time to actually be able to change. If someone says they changed, look at them and the way they act and what they say and try to look deeper into it all to see if it is actually true. I am not that big of a believer of people changing, because I think most people act they way they want to be, but I know changes can happen.

Fundamentally... no.

Remember the foundation crack on the living room wall?
You went over it with some spackel or plaster and put a lot of effort into "fixing" it and did a great job of making it not show...
But it's still there.

Remember the old US Hwy road you used to drive on to get somewhere?
Then you started using the new Interstate... but the old hwy is still there.

Until the engineers force you to re-pour the foundation.

Until they rip it up for parking lots and malls.

Certain traumas can change personalities. As much as I believe that fundamental personality traits do not usually change appreciably over time, I recognize that they can be altered through major life events.

Change is inevitable. We just don't always have the perspective to see it in ourselves.
