BULL! I can think of countless people of faith who are miserable. Most are missing something in the heart and in the head. At best, their faith helps them cope with a bad situation, but I also think it makes them more likely to stay in that bad situation.

I've never believed in a higher power, and I've never felt empty. Your sense of meaning and mission in life come from within, not from without. I've always been interested in this phenomenon of people feeling like life somehow just isn't enough, so I'll be interested in watching the discussion. Good topic, OP.

Even back then, there were people who weren't satisfied with life. It's not a new phenomenon. Having a sense of purpose in life helps, but that's up to each individual to discover his or her purpose.

What is missing? The lack of functioning at a high enough level of society in general, the lack of higher paying jobs for way too many people, self-absorbed people everywhere, the high costs to live in places that aren't horribly depressing, and the polarization of viewpoints on everything these days.

i'll tell you what's missing;
the mankind need to feed his body and his soul, it's like you need to sleep, need to eat, need to drink......
but the difference is that you don't know what you need, we always neglect our soul.
and when you say "something missing" that means that you owned it and you lost it .
so what is this thing that we lost????????
it's our relationshipi with god

I believe in God. I am very sinful in some ways (in my head), but think it's not bad enough to warrant damnation. As far as heaven goes, people write about it in euphoric terms. If it was just the best long-term snooze for eternity, that would be good enough for me.
What's missing? Money is the root of all evil. It always has been. What that means, in turn, is that people begin to view each other as dispensable (what can you do for me?) such that sincere friendships and relationships are hardly tenable. Look at the evils of Facebook (how MANY friends) and Linkedin (how MANY connections). It's all pretty detestable.

Person #1; "My life is complete. I have a cozy cardboard box, restaurant dumpster food, and library internet."
Person #2; "I hate my life. Some jerk scratched my BMW, my shrink can't stay awake during our sessions, and you can never hire good help these days."

When this becomes a constant personality in someone, they have either lost faith or perhaps never had any. And there are actually many people who are just never going to allow themselves to be happy. The grass is not always greener, people.
I hate the victim mentality, and people who feel this way are always wanting to blame ...(fill in the blank.)
I think the absence of God is certainly a factor in some cases, but even those who believe can act/feel this way.
Peopl need to stop living in the past, worrying about what they don't have, and just enjoy the lives they have been given.

Too many people are selfish, lazy and feel they are owed something. I can't believe there is not at least one positive thing every individual to be thankful for. If you feel as if your life is meaningless, go out and change it. Volunteer somewhere or make someone else's day day easier or happier...the way I see is any day above dirt is a good day.
