Can be various things, ranging from as simple as truly having a kind heart towards women, to wanting respect (not necessarily sex or relationships) from women, to feeling guilty or ashamed of being the so called 'privileged sex', to perhaps in some cases indeed being about getting laid.
I think usually it's probably some mix of the first three.
It's more about championing than it is about rescuing. It's essentially non-sexual kissing up that I refer to, but your story is seen as well.
You're giving him the wrong label. White knights rescue. The guy you're describing is either getting or hoping to get sex from the women. Just because he's married and Christian doesn't mean that he's not a slime ball in regards to cheating on his wife, and sexual harassment of his coworkers.

Absolutely not. He, in fact, was one of those guys who kept the company of women more than he did of men. One of these women was recently married to another person, they were classmates, and another was a young lesbian, and a big troublemaker. That is why I very CLEARLY stated in the OP that it was NOT about sex. It was a down-the-line gender issue for him.

I know a lot, and I especially know the specifics of this situation. And I know a dork who would never be able to, at age 42 +/-, boink some 27 year old chicks, this dork being that person described in the OP. I have also known some of these guys who are actually "one of the girls" and aren't looking for sex from them. Everybody knew of this situation and, if it had a sexual component, it would have made the grapevine. Sometimes readers need to stick to the facts provided for them, just like the requirements on an essay exam.
I know a lot, and I especially know the specifics of this situation.

Awe, see, you don't know anything about it. It doens't matter if he's a dork. You classified him in your first post as a supervisor or manager. That's power. Some women do anything to get ahead. I'm sure feminist women will jump all over me for saying that, but it's true. I've seen it all.

One of the girls he was championing was a young lesbian. Yeah, he's really gonna go far there. Another one was pregnant from a guy her age she was crazy about/living with and had secretly been planning to leave all along, so she wasn't looking for advancement. I've seen it one other time at the supervisor level (this guy has never married and they were presumably his "beards") and another time at the co-worker level, from a guy who had his best man at his wedding actually be a woman and didn't have many male friends. Thank you for your post, though. Some of the others have been much more informative, offering perspectives into why he thinks/operates the way he does, and shooting himself in the foot as far as his profitability goes in the process.

Your point is taken. I have never heard that term before, but male feminist and white knight are used often enough.
This person was toxic, and I am sure still is. The worst part is how he paraded around his Catholicism and bragged about the number of kids he has, almost as if it was a measure of his virility ... or "something" like that.
Considering how he has capitulated with the females in his life, the # of children is perhaps his only brag-worthy "accomplishment" and is probably hauled out often for reassurance that he isn't whipped.
