Social anxiety is a lot more common than I thought. I only just found out it's the third most common mental disorder in the U.S. after depression and alcohol dependence.

How has Social anxiety it affected you?
Did you ever cure the anxiety?? If you did, how?
Or has it only gotten worse over time?

Has the anxiety caused you give up on relationships or do you just keep putting yourself out there?

It is very common. Social anxiety is a product of social awkwardness, not the other way around. Curing it takes diligent practice, endurance and openness to curing it.

I have it and it's pretty severe. I tend to post on forums primarily because they're the only places I can actually communicate with people and shoot the ****. Out there, I seldom speak to anyone. I avoid crowds at all costs.

It's definitely got worse since being in a dysfunctional marriage, the break up and having to move several times due to job insecurity. It makes day to day living very difficult. The types of normal routine tasks that most people take for granted such as going into a coffee shop to order coffee are missions for me and people in my position.

It's made me bexome almost a total recluse to the outside world. Dating again? Highly unlikely. I lack any form of self-confidence and would most likely chicken out of it.

I suffer from it, but nobody would ever know it. It's not as if I come across as socially awkward. Surprisingly, I'm well liked and people tend to be truly surprised when my husband discloses to them (just a brief explanation) why they have to almost push me to get me to hang out.

I've been very fortunate in that my husband is very understanding about my social issues, especially since some symptoms have gotten worse over the years...but he sees and knows why and how I am the way I am.

Nope..

"I am what I am
I am my own special creation
So come take a look
Give me the hook
Or the ovation
It's my world
That I want to have a little pride
My world
And it's not a place I have to hide in
Life's not worth a dam
Till I can say
I am what I am"

I'm marvelous me.

I think I've had chapters of it. I think it had to do with being in settings which didn't bring out the best in me. When I turned 30, I think I just became a lot more selective, and not because I can be, about who I wanted in my inner circle. Sure, I could make a scene if customer service was horrific or speak to an adjacent passenger the whole way across the Atlantic, but there are truly very few people I want to know well. I do a lot of things on my own for that reason.

I suffer from Social anxiety. Sometimes after i speak i feel guilty for no reason or i overanalyze the situation. My biggest problem is that i try to over compensate for it and get too talkative. I've been working on it over the years, but my friends still tell me i'm socially awkward/weird but thats alright. At least i know i'm making progress slowly but surely... i was hoping at my age i'd be able to hold a regular conversation and keep it going for a long term, but unfortunately i have difficulty holding the conversation or keeping it going for more than 10 minutes... Heck it's better than when i graduated high school 3 years ago though because i would laugh or chuckle after everything i say. All-in-all at the end of the day, i am always smiling and know that i am making progress toward the future me.

P.S. going to the gym will definitely help. The raise in confidence can help you become more confident with your social anxiety/awkwardness in your conversations and will also help calm you. It's a good anxiety/stress relief.

I hope you realize how lucky you are.

You do have to wonder though, if a guy suffered from social anxiety would he find a woman patient enough help him through it?

I have social anxiety and depression. At first my therapists and I thought it was merely the latter manifesting the former but recently we've come to the conclusion they might be two separate problems that feed on each other. So that's two strikes out of three but thankfully I'm not too much of a drinker. Not yet anyway.
