My neighbor called me a little while ago and told me she received a cell phone in the mail that she didn't buy. So she used it here and there, then called the company for a new battery. They told her the phone wasn't in her name, but they couldn't tell her whose name it was in. She said her name and address was on it when it was in her mailbox. I told her to just send it back. She then asked me if it's possible the FBI is monitoring her???? What is with these people that think the FBI is listening in on their calls?? She was dead serious and is scared they're watching her every move.

Obviously she doesn't know it wasn't the FBI but actually NSA test bedding a new project technology. Now before someone chimes in with "oh the NSA doesn't need to mail her the phone they can just tap into her existing one" yes this is true but would defeat the purpose on "hornets Cupid" and would make the whole project a waste of government funds.

tell your friend to do a freedom of information act request from the feds, then she can find out all sorts of things the feds know about her. she can even find out if she is under watch as well.

it is the way I found out I was tsa blacklisted from flights.

It's probably one of those free government phones for people getting some sort of federal aid. By her saying the Feds is "monitoring" her is telling of WHY she got the phone.

So it was only the phone, no card? She took the card of her older phone and used this new phone instead? An she thought it was a gift from her phone company because she was a good client or something?

I am not very up to date on how this stuff workd (it got a very old cell phone with a pre-paid card), but maybe was a mistake of the phone company?

What is wrong with someone who would use a phone that she didn't order in the first place without trying to find out where it came from? Ask her why she thinks the FBI would want to monitor her when she isn't all that bright.

Well is she doing anything criminal or is anyone she calls regularly doing anything criminal?

If not, then no reason for any law enforcement agency to do such a thing.

Or is she having financial trouble? If yes, maybe an "angel" / friend sent her a present!

Another possibility is identity theft. Someone used a credit card in her name to purchase the cell phone and they sent it to her address rather than the address of the thief. Does she have any kids (teenagers) who might have used her credit card? Anyway she should check her credit card statements to see if there are any unauthorized charges.

And if any possibility that some sort of identity theft is going on, she should check her credit report. See if there is anything unauthorized on it.

Another possibility is someone is getting her mail or certain things sent in the mail along with all this. For that she should get her mail as soon as it is delivered or have it held at the post office for a while. Someone could order stuff in her name, then get it out of her mailbox before she gets home - but missed getting the cell phone.

All sorts of possibilities!
