When your ticket's punched, no matter how careful you have been, it's time to go. And one never knows when one's ticket is going to be punched. Yes, you can live your life with due care and caution to all things considered. But when it's time to get on the train....goodbye.

One thing we could (but won't) learn is that there are sinkholes all over the world, and there is nothing new about people and their houses being swallowed up in them, and when it happens in an American suburb, that does not signal some new category of catastrophes that we suddenly have to "do something about" in terms of geophysical engineering or urban planning.

There is a fearmonger set that would have us eliminate the oceans, if it would save one American life.

What can we learn from the Tampa Bay sinkhole tragedy?
Nothing. Mother Nature does what she wants.

Funny how I expected this thread to be something entirely different....what I keep thinking of with this story, is wondering what that man was thinking about just before hell opened up beneath him. Were his last moments enjoyable to him, or did he spend them worrying about some stupid thing that in the end didn't really matter at all? To me the lesson is enjoy each moment, right now, because we can never predict when it will all end. I really hope he was cracking up laughing at a movie he was watching or thinking about how nice his gf's skin feels. I spend a lot of my time before sleep worrying about things that in the scheme of things are such a silly waste of energy, this was really a reminder to me to try to let go of worry and control and just live.

Maybe companies could be started to test the ground under houses for air cavities? If so, then we won't be able to claim that these tragedies are unavoidable.

Research before you buy real estate in Florida. Caveat emptor!

And never believe realtors.

Realize that Florida is just a huge swamp, even the pythons and gators are trying to take it back.
