I have been in IT for 15 years and don't see myself going anywhere. I can't stand what I do, but the bills need to be paid and IT does the trick.

Say I have to install an operating system on a computer or even wait for a window to load. I just don't care about all of the crap on the screen until the screen comes up that lets me work. My eyes literally cross and I see double because I don't care about what is on that screen until it is the screen that I need to do my job,

I don't mind working hard, I just find that I am much faster than the computer. If I got up and did something else while Windows loaded this or that. I'd never be sitting down. Everytime I do get up, I take too long and have to hit next.

I end up surfing the web and not doing anything. Looking at an hourglass on a screen bores me.

How can I handle this better?

Thanks

Can you carry around a laptop and be doing something on that at the same time you are updating a computer?

Intelligent people are most happy when they are advancing in their careers and learning new things.

What do you like to do for fun? What would you like to learn about?

As for myself...

Modern computers are boring as they are so tightly controlled as to what you can and can't do. However there are "microcontrollers" which you can wire up to LEDs and write programs to make the LEDs flash on/off. Or play sounds, control motors, make a robot, etc. And then go all the way up to making an Android smart phone control the microcontroller via Bluetooth.

That sort of thing is tons of fun to me as you have access to the "guts" of the electronics via your programming. The 1's and 0's!

Anyway the reason I mention that is just one microcontroller can have a 400 page data sheet which explains how it operates. And you can spend years reading about this stuff! That could also be a future career change.

If you are interested in that sort of thing, starting and easiest is a Parallax "Basic Stamp" sold at Radio Shack or here...
Parallax Home (Note you can download all sorts of documentation to read in your spare time.)

The forum where they discuss anything and everything about the above is here...
Parallax Forums

Next higher up in difficulty is the Parallax "Propeller" microcontroller. Same sites as above.

Then beyond that are Microchip microcontrollers. They are the "king" of endless 400 page documents all about the hundreds of various microcontrollers they manufacture.

Microchip main site...
Microchip Technology Inc

Microchip forums (these guys are professional programmers, so read the documents before asking questions!)
Microchip

Microchip Sales (You could probably spend a year just going through their various web sites!)
Welcome to microchipDIRECT

I'm in IT as well.

Figure out how to streamline your job, especially this task.

Figure out how to make your installs "silent/touchless"... it can be done.

Figure out how to do these installs remotely.

You can easily multitask, from your desk while other things are going on.

---

Though, if you can't stand what you do. Then look for another job.

What do you really want to do?

I sort of envy my smoking coworkers- they just go out and have a smoke. Me I sit and watch the green bar slowly moving or keep checking the log files to see when the thing is done. But Facebook and such are a help.

You could always get up and take a walk around the perimeter of your office. By the time you're back, loading is done. Win.
