For me if there was a song I really liked...that really spoke to me...and I was somewhat drunk...I just crank the music (this was in the apartment)....not so much the attention but the high feeling of the music and the beer or whatever working together....exuberance....
The car stuff with the THUMP THUMP THUMP I, too, find annoying. But a bit of pot calling the kettle black....(yet my music was more the jam band/folk rock/bluegrass variety...so the song that got cranked was something like Rocky Island or Bertha or something like that....
I don't always listen to my music loud, but I suppose when I do, it's because I like feeling surrounded by the music and I feel more connected when the bass beats in my chest. I guess it really depends on the person but that's just why I do.

I agree with this. There are certain songs that just require turning up the volume. Most Santana, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. My wife turns it up for Adele. Then it goes back down to a normal level. Fortunately we can blast away at home and the neighbors are not close enough to hear it.
For one they have the young person mindset of "I will live forever", "nothing will ever harm me".
But many of these are played WAY above the level where hearing is damaged. OSHA requires workers who are working around noise that loud to wear hearing protection.
They are pretty much saying "I'm in a music video"
