Is it possible to lessen the desire for sex if a person wants to?
Yes it is possible if you do not think about it,
because most of a persons sex desire starts in the mind.
Get your mind on other things than having sex.
As someone else pointed out, desire begins in the mind. As I've gotten older, a combination of lessened hormonal pressure, aging, and lack of imagination due to lack of illusions and thus not being able to conjure plausible fantasies to goad me into seeking out sexual indulgence of any sort, and lack of opportunity means that it doesn't cross my mind for days at a time, and then not much. However, different people's mileage will vary greatly. And I do find that keeping busy with things that interest and fulfill me makes a big difference.

Yes. The first thing is to cut out is the fantasies. Any pornography or erotica, throw it away or delete it.
Obviously, the conscious you is not completely in control of your thoughts. If a fantasy begins to form, switch activities to do something which actively uses your mind.
In public, practice "custody of the senses". You can glance at girls that pass by you, but do not let those looks linger. Skip past sexually-charged scenes in movies and TV shows. Don't listen to music with sexual lyrics.
Exercise. Fast once or twice a week from meats and eggs, which contain zinc.
etc.
