people don't wash their hands, they have cats up on the kitchen counter, they let their dogs lick the bowl, they lick the utensil they are using to cook with, then stick it right back in the pot or pan and continue cooking with it....thanks but no thanks. some don't like you and you don't even know it. you don't know what they could be putting in your food.

And they may be cooking or preparing food with really old ingredients.

There's a TV commercial where the family is getting ready in the morning all rushed and frazzled, and they show the cat run across the stovetop!!
That's one reason I don't think I will have cats anymore.. I did have cats and they did all run on top of my counters, and after the way I know they use the litter box, I have realized that fact, but didn't quite know what to do. They insist on it because, they are cats.

If it's family, it's not usually a problem, however if I don't know the person/people, I just CANNOT eat their cooking. Even being offered a drink at someone else's home, I'm weary of using their cups/dishware. There are potlucks here @ work, and I never participate for this very reason. It's sort of like sitting on/touching public toilets, it's just not something most people will just up and do. Is this normal behavior? Can't imagine most people automatically and willingly eat someone else's food
Nope. Not weird at all. I'm exactly the same way. I am very hesitant to eat at anyone else's home. If it wasn't cooked by me, or in my house, I don't really want to eat it. Oddly enough, eating at restaurants doesn't bother me so much. Then again, there are laws in place and periodic inspections for them though.
I'm exceptionally picky about my food. I won't generally eat left overs after 1 day. I won't use milk after the expiration date. I don't like using other peoples glasses / silverwhere / dishes etc.
I have a friend who always invites a bunch of people over to eat chilly or vegetable soup, or whatever. I won't eat it because he has 5 dogs, an unknown number of cats, and they are all in the house. It reeks!!! I always just make up some excuse why I don't have an appetite and can't eat.
But, you're not weird, rest assured. You're just a germ-o-phobe like many other people, me included.

I assume you avoid restaurants and fastfood joints, I know I do.
I worked in the kitchen of a restaurant and would see the cook leaning over a pot of sauce with sweat dripping in from his face. The only person I trust cooking my food is me and that is only 50% of the time.
It was a hot July evening one summer when I decided I wanted a pizza. I mean like, really hot. 90 degrees or so. I ordered from a little shop here in town. It's a tiny place. There are probably bathrooms bigger than this pizza shop. So tiny that even in winter, the inside is nice and toasty because the small place retains the heat from the ovens. I walked in to pick up my pizza and it was blistering hot, and the lady running the register had sweat pouring off her. I took one look at that, said nope, turned around and walked right out.
For this reason, I won't order a pizza from any shop that doesn't have A/C in the summer time.

This is a good point. I have a hard time eating something from someone who doesn't sell food or cook food for a living. There's one person's cooking i'll eat with no problem, but its because i know this person is a phenominal cook who only uses top notch food and ingredients and is an obsessed neat freak, there's no way that any of the process is anything less than 100% sanitary (as sanitary as you could be) but other than this, i'm not looking to run over to someone's house to eat all that often.
