The savages in the hood act like predictors in The Wild Kingdom, in that they scope out the weak and then pounce. If you can mimic their behavior they may think twice about making you a vic.

I always look back when walking on sidewalk. Who cares if it is awkward sometimes?

Like others posted, I can tell how far someone is behind me and how fast they are moving just by the sounds.

I saw a somewhat attractive woman do that as I walked (far behind her) to my building. Then she stopped and sat down in the front of the building next door, like she was resting from a power walk or maybe trying to get me to pass her. It was weird. Earlier I think somebody had actually shouted at her from a car while we were both walking.

Anyway, I usually don't check behind me unless it's a clearly scary setting or I hear a noise.
