I've experienced these many times - I have no doubt that its part of the regular mental process, but have never seen them discussed. A couple of examples:
1. You're heading for the bus stop - which is still pretty distant, you see your bus approaching, noting its number, for a split second you feel rewarded (it's the bus you wanted), then your 'thinking' mind kicks in, and you realize that seeing the bus at this stage is a minus because you'll miss the damn thing.
2. You reach into your pocket for your keys and can't find them, there's a slight panic as you scramble through your other pockets. You find them, and for a split second there's a slight feeling of disappointment (you've just invested this adrenaline rush in a non-event), followed by a more rational feeling of relief.
Conclusion - these are just a reminder of how the automatic response part and the rational part of the brain are often out of synch.
