I know most adults lose a lot of their imagination as they grow older, but how and why? Because of society? Corporate America? When I'm around little kids, they're like adults but much more open, sweet, and fun to talk to. They like to pretend they have super powers and can freeze me. But even when they're not playing pretend the things they say are funny and honest. They're not afraid to call me out on my BS and say "duh" when I say something obvious.

The most frustrating part is finding out that I have bought into the corporate America BS. I get bored of the conversations I have but don't know how to turn it around. They become so straight laced. About the weather, a straight story of whatever happened.. I have an easier time talking to international students. They tell me maybe Americans are too polite or whatever, but they also seem very closed off.

Corporate office jobs really do suck the life out of you. I have never dealt with so many uptight, serious, humorless people since working in the "corporate world."

As we get older and acquire more experience, folks often learn to play it "safe", by not revealing too much until they know someone better. Especially in the workplace, where their livelihood is at stake. Of course some of it also has to do with whether you are "perceived" as safe or not, and the local 'culture', where some places are simply more 'sociable' and outgoing than others.

It also might sound kinda corny, but maybe check out the Dale Carnegie courses (aka, Dale Carnegie's Secrets of Success from How to Win Friends and Influence People). They've had a lot of famous grads, from Joe DiMaggio, to Ann Landers, Warren Buffett and Ronald Reagan!

Because adults have serious responsibilities and kids do not. Adults are imaginative, but on a grown up level.

Dealing with the day to day realities of earning a living and paying for living expenses and responsibilities that go along with it, will tend to do that to a person!

American culture--push, push, push, work, work, work. Be something, always do something, always go after something, but never just be and enjoy the simple things in life.

I figured this all out watching my nephew grow up...

I remember his mom driving up to my house with him in the back seat - age 4 or 5. He had the biggest smile on his face - no worries or responsibilities. Happy Happy!

Then he grew up and turned age 20 / 21. That smile was wiped off his face as he suddenly had bills to pay, a car and repair bills to pay for, and a girlfriend to have arguments with.

So far as corporate people, I once was talking with a CEO of a business which had all the workers out on strike - major trouble to say the least. Anyway this guy was miserable with all these impossible troubles. He said he sometimes wished he had a regular minimum wage job with few or little responsibilities - that he would be MUCH happier without the troubles of his job.

Yep. Also, most adults are living in constant fear of losing their jobs and middle class lifestyle. All it takes is two words from your boss and your whole world can come crashing down. Of course it is taboo to admit that.

All of the above is true. Responsibilities, which come at you from all sides when you become an adult, will do what you describe.

I am 57 and still have a lot of imagination.

I think most people take themselves too seriously.
