It's probably no secret that autistic and aspie folks are increasingly attracted to online socializing and forums just like this one, because they feel more 'safe' and 'controllable' than IRL. But naturally online venues still often have the same variety of 'topics' as 'real life', which can also include subjects like the arts, philosophy, religion, humor, interpersonal relationships, and others, which are often less 'literal' than the kinds of things that folks on the autistic spectrum seem more comfortable with.

So to the extent that's true, is discussing "abstract" subjects more or less 'off the table' with autistic folks, or is there another way they can be included, and simply need to be approached differently? And when dealing with someone online, how do we even tell when that's a problem to begin with?

Inability to understand abstract concepts
It is hard for many people to understand the difference in concrete and abstract thinking and how hard abstract thinking can be for people with autism. There are so many abstract concepts that we understand, but we take that understanding for granted.

Once you start discussing it with them, you can't stop. Once they get on a roll, they hate it when somebody changes the subject.
