^Yep. I'm terrible with remembering names so callling someone "buddy" is my go to until there name sticks inside the ole head.

And since all my friends are close to my age and older, I often call them "hey girlfriend" light hearted and fun and friendly term.

I think it means the "dude" who is calling you "Bud" probably has a certain "style" - i.e., surfer, skater, some other category of person who uses certain "cool" (immature high school or whatever) terms and language.
