Why do you always feel like you have to give people gift or buy them amazing gifts? I am sure you are picking out amazing deal but at what cost? I can't imagine you finding all these awesome deals without spending hours and hours shopping. Are these people in your life worth spending so many hours in when you could have been doing something else for yourself.

Maybe its time you stop giving gifts. Buy things for yourself & simplify your gift giving to cash & gift cards for this year. If the excuse of "oh I will give this to xyz" isn't there, then you can truly ask yourself "do I need this?".
I like to go for walks... and while waking I stop in stores along the way and just automatically check out the cleareance section by habit. I scan for any deals that are excellent ... if I see something I can use I grab it. If not I dont buy.

Lots of stores in my city.

On Saturday I got a set of 8 OPI Nail Polishes for $5.... they retail for $10 plus each... I could give it or keep it.

Gifts are for events... not usually just be gifts ex Birthdays, holidays ... or when visiting people.

Regardless I need to scale back like crazy because you are right ... I should not be stock piling gifts to the point it is taking up space that could be use for living.

I have a Viking range. I dont like the red handles even if practical and a great range. The handles clashed with the vide in my kitchen so I got a Viking ( alot the viking one I got has gas BBQ grill in the middle).... also a very stupid expensive idea.

I have my own money ... so technically I am not really reporting my spending to anyone one.
Wow! We can certainly be forum friends!

Who could be a bad person if they own Viking (or Wolf)? I picked Wolf mainly because of appearance. I just love the way it produces mega-heat and no foot tapping waiting for something to heat up! I gotta go light or white with my kitchen granite counter or repaint the rest of the ground floor (currently light walls, white trim, light hardwood floors). At least one thing... What color doesn't go with stainless?

Hey, the ideal power couple: he has his own money, she has her own money! And both have lots!

Question: Could a guy who loves his Wolf get along with a gal who loves her Viking?

OMG, I just noticed, you have a Sous Vide too? I just love my steaks about a minute after they quit going "moooo!"

Oh .... sorry to miss lead.

I dont have lots of money .... more likely bad spending habits which consume my money. I have nice things...... get them at great deals so it looks more expensive then it ism I guess that is part of the buzz I get out of shopping.... I like seeing what smaller amount of money I can trade up for something of higher value. It is more like a game then logical in all situations.

I own a wonderful range.... but hardly cook and I don't like being home. I also dont want to spend time cooking.... because I don't want to spend more time eating or washing dishes.

Oh I like you no matter if you are rich or poor. However any house with Viking can't be too shabby.

We now return you to on-topic posting!

The bigger issue is I know this is bad ... but I dont really want to stop. I think I am totally going nuts. I am divided between thinking this is just a passion for shopping and fashion .... or just an addiction.

You could change the story to: but the addiction remains the same. Change it to: "I have a gambling addiction. I have no idea why I sit in casinos for 5 hours. The feeling is amazing while I am winning. But it's just not a good idea to gamble your money away. But I just can't stop."

You see I changed the story but all addictions are similar, not good for you but you can't or feel powerless to stop.

When does a behavior become an addiction?

It can't be a question of "when you can't stop it" or otherwise I have a breathing addiction.

This what I am unsure of what is the real diff9 between a passion vs an addiction.

2 factor about me remain at core here..... if I am not planning or doing something I get anxious and depressed. I get bored very easily. When I am shopping I feel I am being productive. I cant really not be on the go.... or I get depressed or anxious. If I am shopping I am out and moving usually ... this feels productive and exciting..... because I feel like I am treasure hunting. I need to be on the go.

My friend has a shopping problem and buys stuff without checking the price before buying. Don't care what it costs just buy it. She has bi-polar and I think it does alot with her medicines she takes. She also love eating out two and three times a day.

This is the psychology forum. I took what the OP said at face value. If it is fascinating discussion material, why post in psychology?

I do know several people who have had serious shopping addictions. Addiction is not real fun.

But is it just a personality trait that coukd lead someone to be addicted to anything. For me I know I am really impulsive and tend to go too far with things at times .... so I have avoided doing this historically associated with addiction ex smoking... drugs... alcohol and gambling. Certain behaviors are more socially acceptable.

Unlike your freind I look at prices.
