An interesting exchange with BF Skinner on why people can become depressed.

I got interested in this behaviorist view of depression after reading this article.

Quote:
On this basis, Ferster and Lewinsohn developed their behavioral model of depression. They emphasized that depression develops as a result of maladaptive transactions between the individual and the environment. In other words, when the environment becomes less rewarding and more punishing, the individual gets depressed. To avoid these aversive stimuli, they withdraw themselves from the environment...

I have no idea. I know I get sporadic bouts of deep depressions that last 3 days for no reason. It does not occur very often, but when it does, I can hardly move and my breathing becomes very shallow. It is not a fun experience.

The reasons are invisible because your mind censures it from your own conscious awareness.
You become lazarus, I've seen this before with an employee yrs ago.
You unwittingly bring it about.

Its ok for people who want to change without really changing, they just want to find relief, but relief isn't freedom. I find, almost without exception, people are not willing to go to the length required to get free for good and all.

I will tell you this, depression is always rooted in self, it is self caused, it is not a result of chemical imbalance, the symptoms are but symptoms are not a root cause. Many people assume its chemical imbalance, they are mistaking correlates for causes. But they rely on medication and limp through the rest of their life. They sacrifice the best for the good.
