IMO, this sharing of information through prayer is often attention seeking and another way of gossiping. There are people who pray with good intentions. Those people usually keep it to themselves.

I don't pray and when someone requests my prayers or prays for me, it makes me uncomfortable. However, I don't want to be viewed as a heathen. I might type a token "praying" in the comments or not respond at all (especially when it is a friend of a friend of a friend). I believe in God and all but the practice of religion is not for me.
What is your opinion on people on social media (Facebook) who post asking people to "pray" for someone they know who is in dire straits? I have been noticing this a lot and it makes me wonder are they really sincere in their efforts or just "fishing for likes/comments". And I also wonder if they really do need "prayer", why don't they post themselves. And if the poster is doing this without the person's permission or blessing. I noticed one today that went into great detail about the "issue" that asked for prayer and it made me wonder if the person wanted strangers to know such personal details about them. Thoughts?
Most evangelicals do this. People who do this do it pretty much for show, to show how Godly they are and that they are doing their Christian duty by praying for somebody in need. I used to do this a lot when I was religious so I know the mindset.

They have a better chance of getting a prayer than they do of getting any form of tangible assistance or comfort. Anyone can promise to pray for someone. No one will check up to see if that person did it. It's the cheapest form of attempted comfort there is.

I'm actually somewhat disgusted at the thought of getting "credit" for praying for a stranger - oh, but they aren't a real stranger because we are "connected" by being a "friend" of a "friend" or whatever passes as a friend on social media.
...or the thought that someone will get better if enough people will pray for them after being convinced to do so on social media. If you have 500 friends I guess you'll do a lot better than with only 50 people praying for you! Is that how it works?
And yeah, the person asking on another's behalf is a busybody do-gooder who is also hoping for credit for a good deed they are doing, regardless of privacy considerations.

Since I don't believe in any of the religious nonsense of course I find it stupid when people do any behavior or activity related to religion or faith.. Praying doesn't do anything or stop anything.... Delusional fear driven people.
