I have this issue where I become deeply infatuated with people all the time. Sometimes it lasts a few months and sometimes it lasts a few years. I was reading that this behavior is similar to drug addiction because it releases dopamine in the brain, and I think that's why it keeps happening to me. I'm addicted to being infatuated with people. These are usually people who I have no chance of dating so it's all pointless, but I still can't stop doing it. I've very recently fallen for someone who I can never have, but I'm still in love with the idea of being with this person. I spend all day thinking about this person and other things get neglected. Every time I fall for a new person, I feel like my feelings are more intense than the last time, but technically they can't be since I eventually get over the new person too.

If it's affecting your relationships and making your life miserable or as you say promotes neglecting things, then maybe you need to seek counseling.

I don't feel like it's making my life miserable. I enjoy it. I just recognize that mentally it's similar to being a drug addict. Maybe doing this prevents me from being a drug addict.
