Further - Merriam-Webster's says that the origin of the word is French, "good woman, prudish woman," short for prudefemme.
In other words a woman who won't have sex with anyone other than her partner?
Ironically, anyone who uses this term is also making a judgment on other peoples' sex lives. I mean, isn't the term usually used to back people down when you want them to see something your way?
Very good point Lodestar . I think there may be a connection to the word prudent, or wise, discreet, shrewd. Prude was from the French, and prudent was from the middle English derived from middle French. It would make sense.
I see the point has been missed entirely by a few people who argue about semantics. Let me rephrase then. How do religious people who seem to be so against any kind of sex (think the Duggars) still manage to do it to reproduce?
People who are again any kind of sex probably don't have it. Like hermits.
I think you're going to have to explain the situation more specifically for us to understand what's puzzling you.

Since you asked .....
There are those of us who believe that sex was designed, and created by the God who came up with the idea of the Universe, and everything in it. With God's help we will try to live as close as we can to the original design as revealed to us in the Bible.

Right???
I would think the number of children the Duggars have would prove they aren't against sex.
That was my point about "behind closed doors." None of us actually knows what goes on between the two of them. They could be complete freaks in their own bedroom. But just because she doesn't show cleavage and he doesn't have affairs (that we know of ) doesn't necessarily mean they are "prudes."
Given how you have to make kids and all, how is it that prudes have kids? Do they just see the act of sex as a necessary evil to procreate? I've honestly never understood the mentality.
I don't think prudes see any ick factor in sex, they just view the act as being 100% utilitarian for the purpose of reproduction.

Define what your version of prude is?
Some people would say they are the people who don't want to dress sexy in public or talk about sex in public etc.
Is prude the opposite of s.lut or man w.**** ?
