It's in the Psychology forum because there is a lot of psychology behind a person's motivation to be one of the first people to announce a well-known person's death. People who announce are seeking attention and seeking responses/replies. Responses/replies give jolts of positive serotonin to the brain, as do receiving messages.
Psychology is the study of human behavior.
Grieving on social media is one of the most shameful acts of acceptable narcissism today. See how upset I am? See how big a fan I was? See the run-in I had with her in line at Starbucks? It’s a cockfight at a funeral, a talent show at a wake. Mourning, once complex and personal, has been reduced to a few hasty clicks and GIFs.
This ^^^ article has some great points but is a bit harsh, though. If a celebrity dies whose work I really enjoyed or who influenced me, I might write a genuine post about it not for attention but to share in the experience with others who care.
Of course, it can be argued that the whole driver behind social media is attention, but that's not gonna stop me from sharing something I consider meaningful. Im not trying to be the online town crier or anything.

This statement sums it up quite nicely, Mod cut.

Maybe this is more of a "pet peeve" than a psychology topic, but I've always wondered...
Why does EVERYONE with a social media account feel the need to post the news of a celebrity's death?
Do they think everyone else also posting it on their social media accounts isn't aware of it?
Well, since different people subscribe to different feeds, and follow different people...probably?
My husband follows very little via his social media accounts. I happened to read online that his favorite author, Terry Pratchett, had died of Alzheimer's complications. I shared it with him, because I knew he wouldn't have read it anywhere otherwise.
I did a research project on social media use for my grad program, and in doing a lit review of a pretty large body of research, found that messageboards/forums are definitely considered one type of social media classification.

Maybe you need to step away from social media. I know you're familiar with the concept of something going viral. If it bugs you soooooooooooooooo much, step away, instead of exposing yourself to an irritant x 100,000,000.
