Just had a random encounter with a stranger as we both went for an exit at the same time, both stopped and made way for the other to go, and had a friendly laugh about it. Different races. This was during the morning rush hour, where most folks--including myself--are not in particularly friendly moods, just trying to get to where we're going. It stood out because the guy seemed genuinely good-hearted and it reminded me that not everyone has evil intent.

I read a very moving article a woman wrote awhile back about how she challenged herself to smile at strangers for a week in NYC, and she wrote about all the weird reactions she got. At the end of the week she found herself in a small store buying something, gave the cashier a bill that was too large or something, and the cashier returned it to her with some kind remark and a smile and the woman just burst into tears and didn't really understand why. She said that after a week of mostly negative and indifferent reactions the genuine friendliness and smile of the cashier just overwhelmingly got to her in that moment.

It feels great to spread a ray of positive energy to another human being but as I get older I find fewer and fewer opportunities to do so and even less interest in looking for them.

Sadly.

I'm having a difficult time coming up with three foods that go together as perfectly as these. With orange (or apple) juice, maybe coffee. Yum!

I've kind of "adopted" a disabled woman that had 2 strokes, her adult daughter and 3 yr old grandson. They live near the barn where i have my horses. The daughter receives some foodstamps, and doesnt get the child support she is supposed to get because baby daddy quits job as soon as state starts to garnish wages.
I got their 2 dogs fixed and vaccinated and found homes for the puppies they had. When the elderly dog was ill took to emergency vet, and paid to get dog cremated and ashes returned. Yesterday i took the disabled mom shopping and bought xmas dinner fixings for them, and xmas presents/birthday presents (his b day is today), and wrapping paper for her to be able to give to him.
I try to help directly rather than giving to charities.

I have been doing the same for years. I pay the majority of vet bills for two families and recently paid for a necropsy and cremation too.

Also pay to vet and sterilize any feral cats they manage to catch and release.

My vet keeps my CC number on file to be used by XXX and YYY families at their request.

I also give to a local animal shelter.

  1. On Friday night I was due to leave to office at 5:30 to grab a quick bite and head directly to early religious services. The attorney from whom we rent to offices asked me to wait since he needed help carrying gifts to the car. On the way as we were carrying he told me that he had a cardiac episode earlier in the week and pending tests this coming Friday could not carry more than five pounds. I was a bit late to services but it was well worth the lateness.
  2. At Torah study the next morning I observed an elderly participant struggling with the door. I got up to open it. He did thank me.

pausing to ask "is that okay with you?" instead of just charging in for a favor. it helps to get the request on a practical/realistic start, and shows consideration. nice! too rare these days.

Texting the attorney from whom we rent space to ask how his cardiac checkup went, and arranging to cover court for him this Friday.

I was walking into the parking garage at the airport, and there were numerous steps down from the sidewalk down into the parking garage. A lady was rolling a huge suitcase, so I picked it up for her and carried it down the steps. She seemed surprised but smiled and said thank you.

My neighbor next door had her landscaper uproot and trash a beautiful pink rose bush, which never got any sun, and was always blooming. My neighbor in the back and myself, really missed this rose bush which never did any harm to anyone. So, on Xmas Day I went over to her house with a pink rose bush from the Nursery and said: Merry Xmas to the both of us! Into the ground it went!

A good friend treated me to lunch, It wasn't necessary but it was very nice of her.

I gave a small gift and a hand written card to our post office person wishing her happy holidays and thanking her for all she does all year. Our small town doesn't have mail delivery and this woman works very hard keeping all the regular mail plus the packages straight. She seemed suprised and happy.
