Magic Qwan,

Ever hear of a guy named Maslow?

Sociology is not a science. It is a hobby. Have you ever seen a want ad for a sociologist?

Think about it--with enough money, you can overcome or at least ease any problems you may encounter.

With enough social influence, you get to decide what is "right" or "wrong" for other people and can make them do your bidding.

With enough knowledge, you can do what benefits you in the long run.
Money, social influence and knowledge are certainly helpful, but I'm going with cell biology to start with, and to end with.

Makes a nice sandwich, a real nice sandwich!

Seriously, in between - I agree with bobspez - persistently working to develop one's conscience, consciousness, is the most valuable resource, and the energy for that work comes from within, the cell biology.

To be sure, material comfort and knowledge help significantly in the meantime, but it doesn't require an overabundance of material comfort, just enough.

By the way, "science" is one of the most abused and demeaned terms - everybody claims to be one! - over the 10 years or so, maybe much longer.

Good Luck!

I never called it a science. Its similar to a science, and uses the methodology of science, but its one of those “soft” sciences that is easily tainted by personal bias. Yes, I’ve seen a want ad for a sociologist—in universities. Luckily, I changed my major in college from sociology to general studies at the end, so I’m a generalist, not a specialist.

I read the thread title and the OP and thought, "most important for what, exactly?"

Success? Depends on how you measure that. Success is pretty subjective actually.

Happiness? Oh that one is a can of worms. As some have said, there have been rich, brilliant, famous people who were yet miserable, even to the point of suicide.

I wonder...OP, would you consider reframing this concept to say, "These three things are my own top priorities in life, what are yours?" That might make this easier to speak to. I don't think you can really pin down three things that are the most absolute important things to the life of all humans, universally. Unless they are like, "oxygen, water, food" or something. Then we get all Maslow about it.

I would, at least, add "Good health - Mental & Physical" to your list somewhere, personally.

1. Money
2. Looks
3. Social connections
4. Intelligence

And in that order.

If you have all those attributes, you'll never want for anything. If you have none of them, your life will be difficult. Probably tragic, possibly short. If you're between those two extremes, your life experience will be between those two extremes.

Exceptions are few and far between.
To piggy back on this, if you're missing #3, your life will also suck. That's what I'm missing.

I dunno. If you have enough money, you are safe from many of the worst things in life.

Social influence? I have a WIDE circle of friends in my current city and my hometown. I'm going back to my hometown for a week and my dance card is already looking pretty full. My cell phone is blowing up 24/7 with all the people who want to hang out. But I don't have INFLUENCE per se. I'm very loved and everyone will tell total strangers how I'm so smart and whatever, but no matter what arguments I make or what beliefs I embody, they're still Trump voters.

Knowledge? I've been reading constantly since the age of 4. My job requires that I have my finger on the pulse of current events. I won an episode of Jeopardy when I was barely old enough to drink. It hasn't translated into power. See above.

Yeah, that's a good point.

Think "sanity" should be added to the list? Or is there a better term?

"coping skills"?

I think those are the most important "resources." With those three attributes, you can acquire money, social influence, and knowledge... and anything else, really.
Are you too young to know better? Or were you born into money?

Are you lacking in one or more of those three qualities?
