A mass incident shooting today in Gilroy.

Has anyone noticed that perpetrators of mass shootings in the U.S. are almost exclusively white (Anglo/Caucasian) men? Any thoughts on why this is?

Whites are the majority population. But blacks are 11 times more likely than whites to commit murder.

This thread is talking specifically about mass shootings, such as the one that occurred this evening in Gilroy, California.

Off the top of my head, the Fort Hood shooter and Virginia Tech shooter each come to mind as non-caucasian perpetrators (though Nidal Hassan was Palestinian, which is typically described as caucasian, though many in the U.S. colloquially do not consider any Middle Easterners white). Mother Jones did a database tracking this fairly recently. Might be an interesting read.

Mass killings are nothing to do with race anyway....culture perhaps, motivated by envy. When an individual feels extremely marginalised, lonely
and becomes extremely envious of their peers, there is a danger that they might "snap" and take out their intense pain and loneliness on those who are the target of their hate and envy, which turns into rage in individuals with a predisposition to anger and violence. I believe this was the motive of the Virginia Tech shooter. He envied other students who were middle class, bourgeois and cliquish. He wasn't Caucasian so again, race has nothing to do with it. Social exclusion and isolation does. Bullying may also be a factor, although most victims of bullying tend to internalise their pain.

There are patterns that exist in mass shooters, for sure...but the strongest area of commonality is by far that of sex. There have been female mass shooters, but their numbers in comparison to males are so infinitesimal that this is by far the area with the most homogeneity.

Many potential reasons for this...women who act out violently or aggressively have generally always been less likely to use firearms over other methods. Even when studying suicidality statistics, men are far more likely to use guns than women are (and it should be noted that suicide is often - though not always - the end result of mass shootings).

Specific ideological motivation isn't particularly uniform, where it even exists in a recognizable manner. Perpetrators have come from a variety of walks of life...they've have been despondent business owners with crumbling careers, they've been veterans, they've been teens with troubled histories, religious extremists, stressed students, disgruntled employees, antiabortionists, estranged spouses, immigrants, citizens, churchgoers, church-haters, etc.

Commonalities, other than being male, seem to be some of the following:

1. They very often have exhibited threatening or abusive behavior to those close to them (spouses, coworkers, etc.) leading up to the rampage. It is rare that massive-scale violence erupts with no warning, though often, the warning signs went unnoticed, unreported, downplayed. Highly antisocial behavior/alienation from society has usually become evident in the time leading up to the event. Even shooters without documented histories of violence (Elliot Roger, Dylan Roof) had people in their lives who noticed this alienation, and were known to have made threats, etc. According to the FBI, about 1/3 of the last 50 mass shooters have been convicted of crimes as an adult. 16% engaged in intimate partner violence, and 11% exhibited behavior that fits the definition of stalking.

2. Regardless of histories, most mass shooters appear to have had no difficulty purchasing firearms and related equipment. There is limited federal criteria where psychiatric issues prevent the purchase of firearms, and in most cases, they are considered fit, for the purposes of gun sales. Most mass shooters have obtained their weapons legally.

3. Most are single...either unattached, divorced, or separated...at the time of the shooting, which clearly may have tie-ins to antisocial behavior.

You can blame special rights/interests groups for ruining empowerment sources for others

OP, since this is your thread and theory, have you researched the numbers on it to find out if it's really true? When I read the title, I immediately thought, "What about the black guy who shot up the Navistar Plant in Melrose Park, IL (maybe twenty years ago, had a friend there), and the black guy who shot up his workplace in Aurora, IL in 2019?". Should be relatively easy to research. and real data would bolster your case more than simply conjecture. By "Going Postal", I'm assuming you mean multiple homicides (or attempted homicides) at a place of current or former employment? May as well set the ground rules out of the gate.

Who are the perpetrators in Gilroy? I can't find an identity or a description, other than male, and it sounds like one shooter is dead (identity known to police but not released) and there's a possibility of an accomplice.
